Five times Doncaster St Leger winner Frankie Dettori has given his backing to a local charity.

The popular sports star, one of the most decorated jockeys at Town Moor, has thrown his support behind a race night due to be held in the town ahead of this year’s running of the race in September in aid of the British Red Cross.

He said: “I have good memories of Doncaster Racecourse and the St Leger. I am also very conscious of the magnificent work done by the Red Cross all over the world.

“I applaud your initiative in running a race night prior to this year’s St Leger and wish you great success in your fundraising.”

Dettori triumphed five times in the Leger - riding Classic Cliche in 1995, Shantou in 1996, Scorpion in 2005, Sixties Icon in 2006 and Conduit in 2008.

The Red Cross race night will be held at Club 39, College Road on September 12, the night before this year’s Leger.

The event gets underway at 7pm and entrance is £5 including a pie and peas supper.
