Leak causes Sheffield mum's roof to cave in - despite repeated warnings to council

Council tenant Paige Bailey, who lives in a Kier-managed house in Shirecliffe, said she called out repairmen multiple times to look at a leak in her bathroom.

Each repairman said it was fixed, even though she insisted it was still leaking.

Things finally came to a head when part of her kitchen ceiling fell in and flooded the house, causing utter devastation and damage to the room.

After ringing Sheffield Council’s helpline she was told that because it was out of hours no one could come out to fix the problem.

The mum, who has a four-week-old baby and a five-year-old daughter, said she had nowhere to go and was left without water.

She said: “I’m a mum and the house was such a mess, it was awful. I was left without water and I have two young children to care for. I was so frustrated that no one seemed to want to help me.”

Action Desk contacted Sheffield Council about the leak. A spokesman said housing management company Kier was responsible for any work carried out in Miss Bailey’s home.

A Kier spokesman said: “Miss Bailey reported a leak on March 15 and advised that she was leaving the property for the evening and would contact again the next day.

A plumber was immediately dispatched the following morning and repaired the leak, before an electrician and gas engineer both checked to make sure the property was safe.

Council Housing Services are contacting Miss Bailey to arrange a convenient date for us to finish the associated repairs needed after gaining access to the leak.

While there have been previous visits to the property to carry out repairs, this is the first one connected to this leak.”
