At the choir’s annual general meeting to Roger’s leadership earlier this month members thanked Roger for all his hard work over the years.

Highlight’s of his tenure include a singing trip to Amsterdam, an 80th anniversary concert at the Cutlers’ Hall, Church Street, and an award-winninItg performance by the choir of a new jazz work by John Surman at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s Southbank.

The choir was formed in 1934 by eight Bolsterstone village teenagers who sang together at church. Now, 83 years later the choir has over seventy members.

Roger, who founded South Yorkshire Police’s underwater unit, said: “It’s been wonderful but I’m in my 70s and it’s time to tackle my bucket list, including foreign travel. I’ll still be singing from the back benches”.

Deputy chairman Mike Bradshaw said: “Roger’s devoted leadership will be sorely missed by the choir, as will his dry sense of humour.”
