A Vietnamese teenager found rooting through bins in Rotherham for food could be a victim of slavery, police have revealed.

A member of the public reported seeing a Vietnamese boy ‘in a distressed state’ in Maltby at about 8.45am on Tuesday, July 5.

The boy, believed to be about 17 years old, was in Coronation Park, looking through bins for food.

The boy has been taken to a place of safety and an investigation has been launched to try to determine the circumstances surrounding his background.

Temporary Detective Inspector Graham Stead, who is overseeing the investigation, said: “We are grateful to the member of public who spotted that something wasn’t quite right and contacted us.

“We are in the early stages of the investigation however we are not ruling out the possibility that this boy is a victim of modern slavery which is why we are asking for the public’s help.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen him either around Maltby or further afield, overnight and into Tuesday morning.

“He is described as having dark spikey hair, of slim build, around 5ft 6ins, wearing grey jogging bottoms and a black puffer jacket.”

Anyone who may have been in the area and seen anyone matching the description is asked to contact 101 quoting incident number 202 of July 5 2016.
