A Sheffield campaigner who works tirelessly to help people with diabetes and the local group he chairs have been honoured at charity Diabetes UK’s national Inspire Awards.

Andy Broomhead, 34 from Chapeltown and the Sheffield Diabetes UK Group received the Local Group and Community Award at the charity’s national Inspire Awards at a London hotel on July 7.

Andy, who owns an IT consultancy business and has Type 1 diabetes, works untiringly to offer emotional and practical support to people with diabetes as a member of the Sheffield Diabetes UK group who campaign for better diabetes services and have raised funds for the charity.

Stephen Ryan, Head of the North at Diabetes UK said: “We are continually amazed by the hard work and dedication that the group commit to helping other people living with diabetes and raising awareness of the condition. It’s an honour to recognize their hard work through these awards.”

“Getting through the regional awards to win a national UK Inspire Award is a massive achievement. This day was also a brilliant chance for us to celebrate all our amazing volunteers and thank them for their support and dedication.”

“Diabetes is serious and growing. In the UK, one person is diagnosed with diabetes every two minutes and it is estimated that by 2025 the number of people diagnosed with diabetes will reach five million. Every hour of time a volunteer gives is invaluable in helping people living with, or affected by, diabetes. Our much-needed work wouldn’t be possible without their incredible support and I’d like to express my thanks and admiration to all of our volunteers who make an enormous difference through their support.”

Andy, chair of the group said: “We’re genuinely humbled that our efforts have been recognised in this way. As a volunteer group, we all work hard to try and support those people in Sheffield who are affected by diabetes and we’re thrilled to receive this award.”
