LATEST: Sheffield shooting - what we know so far

As detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death, with police patrols stepped up for reassurance, here is what we know so far:

WHEN AND WHERE DID IT TAKE PLACE?

Police were called to Daniel Hill, in Upperthorpe, at around 1.35pm on Saturday.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Police received reports of man being shot in the chest. He was taken to Northern General Hospital, where he died soon after the shooting.

The victim had just arrived at a family celebration for his twin sister's engagement when he was shot.

Some reports have suggested the victim was in or near to a black Mercedes when he was shot. Forensics officers examined a black Mercedes parked within the police cordon on Saturday evening.

WHO WAS THE VICTIM?

Assel Al-Essaie, aged 23, was named as the murder victim.

One man, who claimed to be a family friend, said he was well known in Upperthorpe, where he grew up, but had moved away.

Tributes have been paid to him on social media, with relative Abrar Ahmed said he was 'such an amazing guy with a pure sweet heart'.

WHERE HAD HE BEEN IN THE MOMENTS LEADING UP TO THE MURDER?

Mr Al-Essaie's cousin, Abdul Aziz, spoke to him 30 minutes before the shooting outside a city barber's.

He said the victim was 'smiling, happy and getting ready for the party'.

WHAT DID THE POST MORTEM CONCLUDE?

That Mr Al-Essaie died of a gunshot wound to his chest.

HAS ANYONE BEEN ARRESTED?

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and was quizzed yesterday before being released on bail pending further enquiries.

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE NORTHERN GENERAL HOSPITAL ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON?

Visitors to the hospital reported that armed police were present and the entrance to the A&E department was taped off.

It is understood that Mr Al-Essaie's brother had pulled up at the hospital in a white Mercedes with his wounded sibling laid across the back seats.

He ran into A&E shouting for help for his brother, saying that he had been shot.

Members of the public and medics raced outside to assist but the gunshot victim could not be saved.

IS THERE A LINK TO THE SHOOTING AT SHIREGREEN LAST WEEK?

Another man was shot in the chest in Butterthwaite Road, Shiregreen, last Monday night.

The 25-year-old was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but his condition was later described as stable.

A 24-year-old man was arrested and bailed on suspicion of attempted murder.

Detectives investigating Mr Al-Essaie's murder said at this stage there are no links between any other shootings in the city.

WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE CRIME SCENE TODAY?

Police officers and PCSOs are continuing to patrol the area in a bid to reassure the community.

South Yorkshire Police said 'everything possible' is being done to 'determine the exact circumstances of the incident'.

Witnesses are urged to come forward.

Some floral tributes have been left there.

IS THERE A GUN PROBLEM IN SHEFFIELD?

As well as the shooting in Shiregreen last week, Saturday's killing comes just weeks after shots were fired through the window of a house in Southey Green, narrowly missing a pensioner, in what police said was a case of mistaken identity.

The moment those shots were fired was captured in chilling CCTV footage.That shooting is believed by police to be linked to an almost identical incident in Wortley Road, High Green, the previous month.

HAVE ANY POLICE CHIEFS SPOKEN ABOUT GUN CRIME SINCE THE SHOOTING?

Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings described the murder in broad daylight as 'brazen'.

He said he hopes detectives crack the case quickly and seize the weapon used.

Dr Billings said although Sheffield has a gun crime issue it is not on the same scale as other major cities.

He said he is 'satisfied' the police are 'on top of it as much as they can be' but said intelligence is crucial and urged anyone with information on gangs and guns to come forward to help police.
