LATEST: Hero who saved Sheffield police officer's life describes her horrific injuries

A woman police officer's finger was left '˜hanging off', her ankle was '˜smashed and disfigured' and her head was bleeding when she was attacked by a crazed axe man in Sheffield, a hero who saved her life revealed today.

The bobby suffered a fractured skull in the horror attack, her bosses also revealed today.

Simon Ellis, aged 46, claims he spotted the injured bobby ‘half-staggering and half-falling’ out of a stairwell in Plowright Close, Gleadless Valley, while being pursued by a ‘bodybuilder with an axe’.

He said the officer was on the ground with her baton up for protection ‘pleading with somebody to help her and stop him hurting her’.

The officer was one of two bobbies who called at a flat last night to deal with a report of a ‘domestic incident’.

Within minutes violence flared and they were both attacked before the axe man fled to a nearby shop, where he attacked three other officers before he was arrested.

Good Samaritan Simon said: “The lady police officer had been injured the most, came half-staggering, half-falling out of the stairwell.

“She was followed by this big bloke, a bodybuilder with an axe.

“She was on the floor with her baton up, pleading with somebody to help her and stop him hurting her.

“I moved towards the incident and caught his eye when I was about 20 feet away and as I caught his eye he saw the male officer who responded to the incident shouting and screaming at him like you would a mad bull.” “I first tried to help the lady officer by trying to put her arm under my shoulder but we collapsed under her weight because she had a smashed ankle.

“So she asked me to drag her to my house to get her away.

“I told her I can’t carry her and she said: ‘Drag me, drag me’.

“So I dragged her by her body armour with blood pouring out everywhere to my house.

“I dragged her through the front door into the hallway where I locked her in.

“I tried to make the police lady as comfortable as possible,

“I put a pillow under the police officer’s head and tried to parcel up her fingers best I could with a handkerchief.

“Police say I saved her life but I’m not having that. I helped but I’m not bothered about being dramatic. All I want to make sure is she is going to be all right.”
