This is the little boy killed in a tragic accident in a Rotherham canal.

Subhaan Ali, aged 11, of Eldon Road, Eastwood, Rotherham, died last Thursday night in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal near Retail World, Parkgate.

A police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is underway but South Yorkshire Police said today that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The force issued a picture of the youngster on the day an inquest into Subhaan's death was opened.

Subhaan and his friends were playing near to the canal last Thursday night when he disappeared.

One of the theories under investigation is that the children were 'tombstoning ' - jumping into water from a height.

The alarm was raised when the youngster disappeared under the water and failed to re-emerge.

Police and fire service water rescue specialists spent four hours searching the canal before Subhaan's lifeless body was found.

The youngster had just broken up from Sitwell Junior School for the summer and was due to start at Clifton Community School in September.

Dozens of frantic friends and relatives raced to the canal when news of Subhaan's disappearance broke.

Investigating officer, Temporary Detective Inspector Graham Stead, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "Our deepest sympathies go to Subhaan's family.
"A thorough and comprehensive investigation is continuing, but I can confirm that there appears to be no suspicious circumstances.

"We will continue to provide support to the family and provide the necessary information to the coroner."
