The grandfather of missing Ben Needham has returned to the spot where the toddler was last seen alive 25 years ago.

Eddie Needham, aged 68, was renovating a farmhouse on the Greek island when Ben, aged 21 months, vanished in July 1991.

The toddler was playing outside the property when he disappeared.

Ben's family has always believed the tot was abducted but detectives are now working on the theory that he may have been crushed by a digger and buried.

A digger was clearing a neighbouring building plot when Ben went missing, and a friend of the man operating the machinery at the time has told police what he believes happened.

The digger driver died last year, but detectives have told Ben's family to 'prepare for the worst'.

Yesterday an extension to the farmhouse built since Ben disappeared was demolished and the land underneath is to be examined today.

Ben's grandfather laid some foundations for the extension a few weeks after the toddler vanished.

He has been shown around the site being searched by the police since he arrived earlier this morning.

Detective Inspector Jon Cousins said: "I want the experts that are here to have a good understanding of his recollections of the activity around the day and the days after Ben disappeared.

"It's an extremely difficult time for Eddie, very distressing whilst he is here and very probably upsetting.

"He's going to be looking at everything we are doing and I'm going to be giving him a full explanation as to what has led me to be doing this activity over the last 10 days.

"It's very important for me to get a proper understanding of what happened following Ben's disappearance."

Eddie told the Daily Mirror: “All I ever wanted to do was find Ben before I died. In some respects, if they find him its a good thing but it hurts you inside at the same time.

"This has been a long, agonising wait. But I would rather know than go to my grave not knowing.”

Ben's mum had taken him to Kos for a new life after her parents moved abroad.
