suspected lead thieves were bagged by police after officers went on night patrol in Mexborough.

The suspects were discovered on a shop roof and lead was recovered not far away.

A constable and two PCSOs from the Mexborough Safer Neighbourhood Team had changed their day shifts to night shifts to conduct patrols in the area following a spate of metal thefts.

While on patrol in the early hours officers noticed a rear gate open to a shop on Bank Street.

On investigating, they discovered two men on the shop roof, believed to be stealing lead.

The two males, aged 22 and 16, were arrested and around £200 worth of lead was recovered nearby.

PC Phil Black said: “The SNT will proactively patrol areas and provide a high visibility police presence, to catch people who are involved in criminal activity, and to reassure members of the public that action is being taken to tackle any issues or concerns, to ensure their neighbourhood is a safe place to live.”
