HOUSEHOLDS with full green sacks of garden waste can still have a final collection free of charge before a new paid-for service starts next week.
Sheffield Council is axing the free service to save £1.5 million each year.
Households with green wheelie bins have already been told they can have a last collection. Their bins are being removed unless residents agree to pay a fee to continue receiving collections.
A spokesman for Sheffield Council’s ruling Labour group confirmed the authority will honour a promise to ensure households receive a final free collection for green sacks.
He said: “If you call the council, we will arrange for green sacks to be collected, alternatively the sacks can be put in the black bin or taken to household waste recycling centres.”
