The Highways Agency is warning drivers of a lane closure on a short section of the A628 Woodhead pass.
The closure is due to landslips following the recent heavy rainfall.
The westbound lane is closed to allow work on the road.
Two-way traffic signals are in operation.
Signs advising drivers about the closure are in place on the east and west approaches to the A628 and drivers are being advised by the Highways Agency to plan their journeys around the area.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: “Drivers from the South Yorkshire area intending to use this route to get to the Olympic London 2012 football matches at Old Trafford, the first of which is on Thursday, are advised to leave extra time to travel to the event.”
