Landlord drug dens threat

HOUSING landlords are "turning a blind eye" to their properties being converted into illegal cannabis factories, a Sheffield police chief said today.

Chief Superintendent Jon House, district commander for Sheffield, raised his suspicions after officers smashed their way into another factory in the city - taking the number found in recent years to about 60.

The Star reported yesterday that police discovered a drugs farm inside a house on Murray Road, Greystones, where every room in the property was being used to grow cannabis plants.

It is suspected to be the work of a Vietnamese gang and efforts are underway to trace those who have been working in the factory and the masterminds who set it up.

Speaking about previous cannabis factories discovered in the city, which has led to the seizure of millions of pounds worth of the drug, Chief Supt House said action may eventually be taken against landlords who allow criminal gangs to run drug enterprises.

“When we find factories many landlords simply say they knew nothing about what was happening inside their properties, but I would like there to be more accountability,” he said.
