He suffered the injury in his welterweight title defeat to Errol Spence Jr at Bramall Lane.

Sickeningly, it was a similar injury to the one he suffered in his previous fight against Gennady Golovkin.

Now Brook has to go through another operation, on June 16, only this time on the left side of his face. He has confirmed the date of his appointment with a surgeon, but unsurprisingly is not discussing his future: “That’s all I’m saying for now,” Brook said. “I’m having a rest for a while.”

Brook’s family want him to go on holiday and recuperate at his own speed.

They have ignored the remarks of Kell’s former promoter Frank Warren, who said: “If you are susceptible to eye injuries then you should not be in the ring. Brook should seriously think about retirement.”

The family feels that if the 31-year-old gets medical advice that it is safe to box on, he will do so.

But the speculation won’t stop until the decision is made.

The website badlefthook.com stated: “Antonio Margarito never truly recovered from the same injury suffered against Manny Pacquiao, but his career was already waning.

“Brook is otherwise in his prime, despite two straight losses to high-end opposition.”
