Kell Brook's dream is a Bramall Lane '˜history-making' show

Promoter Eddie Hearn is believed to be putting the finishing touches to a unification welterweight contest for Brook, against American Jessie Vargas at Sheffield United’s ground around the end of August.

Brook is in no rush to discuss Vargas specifically until everything is signed and sealed. But he has revealed why the prospect of performing at the ground means so much to him and his family.

Speaking at the Lane, the 30-year-old IBF champion said: “It means absolutely everything to me because my uncle used to bring me down here when I was a young kid and tell me, even before I was boxing, really, that I would box in front of a packed-out crowd. And it would be for a world title.

“It (competing on the pitch) would be all my dreams come true. I know my uncle will be letting a few tears go if we do manage to seal the deal down at Bramall Lane.

“It is going to be absolutely awesome to defend a title and capture another title if we can make the right fight.”

Brook will be the star attraction, ofcourse, but he takes a keen interest in a healthy undercard, which in the past has attracted the likes of Sheffield’s Adam Etches. It is “great to have local lads on the undercard” he said.

“We’ll have a look at the card, it needs to be stacked with great 50-50 fights.

“We are going to be making history if we make the fight here. The crowd is going to be going away with massive smiles on their faces after the best night possible of boxing that we can provide for them. So get ready for some news coming soon.”

Vargas had a flawless record until he was out-ointed by Timothy Bradley in California last year.

But the 27-year-old fighter’s win over New Yorker Sadam Ali in Washington in March delivered him the WBO title.

Vargas has not been keen to put his newly-earned title up for grabs in a foreign country.

But Hearn, being unable to sign up his primary choice targets, seems likely to give Vargas an offer he cannot refuse. And Vargas is already talking up the prospect of a win in England.
