Kell Brook: '˜I will fight at Sheffield United'

Kell Brook's promise to fight at his beloved Bramall Lane hasn't been broken - it's merely been put on hold.

The Sheffield United fan had been planning to fight at the stadium next month. But that welterweight contest with Jessie Vargas was KO’d when the extraordinary opportunity to fight Gennady Golovkin presented itself.

The prospect of fighting on Blades’ soil - something Brook has wanted to do since his Uncle Johnny used to take him as a young fan - is still on the cards.

“I am gutted we couldn’t make the fight at Bramall Lane but the date available meant it had to be at London’s 02 Arena,” explained Brook, who is climbing two weight divisions to take on ‘GGG’.

“But I’m determined to fight there, hopefully next summer.”

Brook hopes fans of his who cross the United/Wednesday divide will come and support him on September 10. United are at AFC Wimbledon that day, while the Owls host Wigan. Brook’s ex-trainer Dave Coldwell has said a Kell win would represent the best ever victory for a British fighter.

“He’s right,” says Brook. “What other fight compares to this, jumping up two weights and beating the man of the moment?”

Meanwhile Brook’s former promoter Frank Warren says Brook is taking on the “toughest assignment out there.”

He said: “I know he is a big welterweight, but it probably wouldn’t make any odds if he was a genuine middleweight, the fact is he is going in against the best there is,” he told boxingscene.com.
