Keeping cool head aboard 'pirate ship' TS Pelican

A UNIQUE sailing ship has made its maiden voyage - with the crew looking forward to air conditioning provided by a Doncaster firm.

The recently commissioned sail training vessel TS Pelican is the latest in a long line of craft to be fitted with a climate control system from White Rose Way-based Webasto Product UK Ltd.

The system enables all upper deck cabins to be fully climate controlled with fresh air at 20C distributed throughout the vessel's accommodation areas. The air can be heated or cooled in one step and de-humidified in hot weather.

Pelican is a tall ship with a difference, and is based on the Barbary Coast pirate ships which terrorised the Mediterranean and North African coast two centuries ago.

Pelican, rigged with 11 sails on three masts, carries eight permanent crew in three cabins and up to 32 trainee voyage crew in the other 10 cabins.

A maiden trans-Atlantic voyage saw the boat off from Weymouth bound for the Caribbean via Portugal, Spain and the Canaries, returning to the UK in spring 2008 - an extended hot weather cruise sure to test the efficiency of the Webasto system.
