Keep calm and carry on

It is interesting to note that in spite of all the pessimistic doom and gloom predictions since the historic referendum result to leave the EU Lord Price, former boss of Waitrose, has said that there is now a bright future for the UK as a global trading nation and there is the opportunity for the country to become a '˜super-connected trading hub'.

According to the Office for National Statistics Britain’s economy has picked up pace despite doom-laden warnings over Brexit and shows the recovery is in far better shape than feared with industry clocking up its fastest rate of growth for six years.

Also Wall Street banking giants and those who were previously giving apocalyptic warnings have now issued a resounding vote of confidence in the City of London in the wake of the EU poll.

In a devastating report the International Monetary Fund, one of the world’s most powerful global financial institutions, has revealed why the decision of the British people to unshackle themselves from the crumbling European Union was so right.

It portrays the EU as ‘an organisation in profound crisis with declining growth, a tottering banking system, mass unemployment, alarming levels of debt and deep-rooted structural weaknesses’.

There will of course be those who will do everything they can to impede the negotiations to leave the EU and until Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty (the formal process for leaving the EU) is triggered I will have my doubts as to whether our exit will be implemented.

At the end of the day if the wishes of the electorate are not respected I hope Theresa May and the Government realise there would be devastating consequences.

We must acknowledge, however, that had it not been for the dedication and determination of Nigel Farage, and votes for UKIP pushing David Cameron into a corner, we would never have got our referendum at all.

Wasn’t it just great for once to shock the whole world by demonstrating that no one can push little old England about and tell the British people what to do?

For that we can be justly proud and hold our heads high, something this country has not been able to do for a very long time.

In the days to come we can do no better than to heed the words of a generation long gone who fought so hard for our freedom, ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’.
