Just asking for trouble

On a recent programme about getting a council house one of the people in trouble with her rent said something that came as no surprise.
HousingHousing
Housing

Talking about private landlords she stated that many private landlords don’t want tenants who claim Universal Credit, because someone in their infinite wisdom decided that it would be OK to pay the claimants’ rent straight into their bank accounts.

Now come on, surely the people who thought up Universal Credit realised that paying rent to the claimants was asking for trouble.

How many people are going to end up with rent arrears and even evictions?

I expect it’s one way of freeing up properties for economic migrants and refugees who will need housing.
