The defendants, who are both aged 30, have both pleaded not guilty to murder in previous hearings.

Mr Ahmed, who was 81 and a father of four, was found badly injured in an area close to Fitzwilliam Road, Rotherham, in the early hours of Monday August 10, 2015.

On Friday August 21, police confirmed that Mr Ahmed had died in hospital from his injuries.

Following his funeral in October, Mr Ahmed’s wife Margaret said her late husband was ‘incredibly proud to be a Yorkshireman’.

In a statement on behalf of the family, she thanked people who had offered their support to them following his death.

She said at the time: “We’d like to thank everyone within our local community and beyond, who have offered us overwhelming support throughout the most difficult time in our lives.

“The community has come together united in sorrow at the loss of our husband, father and friend.”

The trial resumes today.
