Julie relieved at poll pledge

Have your say

SHEFFIELD Council leader Julie Dore said she is ‘relieved’ that the cost of a proposed referendum on whether the city should have an elected Mayor will be covered by the Government.

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has promised up to £245,000 to fund the poll – which the council had feared may have had to come from its own scarce resources.

Coun Dore said: “I’m obviously relieved to hear that local council tax payers won’t be asked to foot the bill for this.

“It is the Government who wants us to have a referendum so it’s only right that they should pay for it, especially when we have already consulted locally and found that there is no appetite for a mayor.”
