Judge praises arson squad

THREE detectives, a police officer and a civilian worker have all been formally commended at Sheffield Crown Court for their investigation into a fatal arson attack which saw five men jailed for a total of more than 16 years.

South Yorkshire Police staff Det Supt Colin Fisher, DC Neil Lacey, DC Ian Bennett who is now retired, Pc Paul Morgan, and mobile phone analyst Leigh Drake were praised by Judge Robert Moore.

Mohammed Hafiz, 32, his brothers Ilyas Khan, 23, and Mohammed Sarab Khan, 20, their cousin Irfan Khan, 29, and Abid Ali Khan, 34, were all sent to prison after they admitted a plot to torch a Sheffield taxi firm in order to make a bogus insurance claim.

The plot went wrong when Timothy Darby, 37, of Hillsborough, who was to be paid to set the blaze, was killed.
