Patriotism is pervading the corridors of one Sheffield school as pupils devote a whole week to celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Flag-waving youngsters in fancy dress at Wybourn Primary School yesterday pulled out all the stops for a spectacular street party, with face painting and a bouncy castle, for the landmark anniversary.
And for the rest of the week children will go back in time to learn about the different decades Her Majesty has reigned the country in.
Little princesses and princes have also created a giant themed mosaic which could go on display in the community.
Anne-Marie Stockdale, an assistant headteacher at the Manor Oaks Road school, said: “All the children are really enjoying celebrating the jubilee.
“The little ones all want to be princesses and the older ones are very interested in the party after seeing the jubilee concert outside Buckingham Palace on television.
“There are children with flags painted on their faces all around.
“I think on the Wybourn community estate it’s quite a big thing, there is a lot of national pride.
“Because there has been so much coverage in the school holidays as well that has pulled it together.”
But there is still a strong educational side to all the celebrations, part-funded with £500 by Great Places housing.
For over the next few days year groups will learn about world, and British events, in a different decade the Queen has reigned.
Special visitors - who would have been youngsters themselves in the decade pupils are studying - will also visit to talk about days, fashions and events gone by.
Party time returns on Friday and there are also competitions to write a jubilee poem or bake a cake.
Mrs Stockdale, who has organised the event with Philip Walker from Great Places, said it was good to add learning about Britain to the cultural timetable.
She said: “The kids are very enthusiastic about it and it is a lovely topic to do in school because it touches on so many things.
“There is the social side, the historical and the geographical aspect too as we look at the Commonwealth.
“So it is an ideal project for the children to be involved in because it looks at so much of the curriculum.”
