THE director of the inspirational British Transplant Games being held in Sheffield this year has backed The Star campaign encouraging more people ‘to be a hero’.

John Timms urged readers to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register as part of the new Gift of Life appeal.

Our campaign aims to get 12,000 more people from the region to join the life-saving register before the games, which will feature 21 sports across 10 Sheffield venues in August.

Dad John, of Rotherham, said: “I would say to people please do sign up to be an organ donor.

“The benefits are there for everybody to see – you can definitely be a hero and may improve somebody’s life.

“If it was you who needed the organ you would accept it.”

John became involved with the games when sports consultancy MLS, where he is a director, first staged the 1995 event in Loughborough.

He hopes this year’s Westfield Health British Transplant Games will be the biggest and best yet.

Athletes of all ages will come from all over the country, some aiming to get into the world games, others to keep fit and some to say thank you to the donor who changed their lives.

Preparations have already begun for the event, which takes place from August 15 to 18, and it will include a Star Donor Run in Don Valley Stadium on August 17 for all to take part in.

Event director John, aged 41, added: “We are hoping to have 700 competitors this year and 2,500 people there in total.

“People do it for all kinds of reasons – but they are also doing it to raise awareness about transplantation and organ donation.

“I think a lot of people also want to come and talk about their experiences.

“This year’s games will include main venues English Institute of Sport and Ponds Forge – as well as at Forge Valley Community School because it has a fine cycle track.

“It’s really nice to be organising an event in Sheffield.”

n Businesses can support the games through sponsorship, volunteering or by promoting the organ donor register.
