The comic completed a 135.7-mile coast-to-coast challenge from the Humber Bridge to Liverpool, which saw her walking through parts of Doncaster and Sheffield as she crossed the Pennines.

The most difficult stretch of her challenge, between Langsett, Sheffield and Denton in Greater Manchester, saw Brand blown off her feet as she crossed the Pennines.

Her attempt almost had to be cancelled on Tuesday after roads were closed and several lorries were blown over by gale force winds from Storm Jonas.

The 58-year-old, who was joined by fellow comedians including Bill Bailey, Lee Mack and Alan Davies for stretches of the trek, has raised £655,481 so far.

As she crossed the finish line she said she was ‘shattered’.

“The most important thing was to raise shedloads of money for Sport Relief because I truly believe that Sport Relief is an organisation that gives a huge amount to people and concentrates not only on projects in Africa but projects here that mean a lot to me - projects to do with elderly lonely people, to do with people with mental health problems and to do with women who are suffering whether it’s through domestic violence or bullying,” she said.

She also said she wanted to show ‘fat, old women’ that they can walk.

Brand’s fund raising is ongoing and her final total will be announced during the Sport Relief weekend between March 18 and 20.

During the trek the comedienne was joined by stars and TV personalities including singer Lesley Garrett, actress Sue Johnston, presenter Gabby Logan and actor Ricky Tomlinson.

Davina McCall, who completed her own Sports Relief challenge in 2014 and joined Brand on day five, said: “It’s tough and she’s been amazing. She’s done a great job.

“In the back of her mind, keeping her going is what Sport Relief do. She knows where the money goes and how important this is.

“This is to raise money for a fantastic charity which helps amazing causes all over the world and right here in the UK.”
