People living on Worksop Road said the incident was over 'within a matter of minutes'.

One man, aged 52, who lived across from the garage but did not want to be named, said: "It woke me up. It was just a very loud bang and a crash but by the time I got up and looked out of the window it was all done - it was over within a matter of minutes

"I just saw the damage. It's obviously a pre-planned thing because we are so close to the motorway and they can be gone so quickly."

Another resident said he saw a car, Transit van and a JCB leaving the petrol station but didn't see the cash machine actually being taken away.

The incident comes just a fortnight after cigarettes and alcohol were stolen from the nearby McColl's convenience store on April 24 in one of five robberies across Rotherham in the space of just 24 hours.

The man, 61, who also didn't want to be named, said: "It's getting worse around here. McColls was done over the other week and the door is still boarded up from that.

"There has never really been anything like this before. I've lived in the village all my life but it seems that there is a lot going on at the minute."

The police helicopter was also involved in the search for the vehicles after the incident and investigations to find those responsible remain ongoing.
