Jamie McDonnell tipped for London date

Jamie McDonnell's next defence of his WBA bantamweight title is likely to take place in Britain rather than the United States, the Star understands.

In 2015, the Doncaster world champion twice travelled to Texas to defend his crown in a pair of big money battles.

But a delay in lining up another American trip has led to McDonnell’s team to make alternative plans.

He was originally expected to return to the US this month for another fight on Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions brand.

The 29-year-old now appears likely to fight on the next bill at London’s O2 Arena.

A show is pencilled in for the former Millennium Dome on April 9, featuring heavyweight sensation Anthony Joshua.

Meanwhile, McDonnell’s twin brother Gavin appears likely to fight on the undercard of Kell Brook’s latest world title defence, expected to be at Sheffield Arena on March 26.

Manager Stefy Bull and promoter Eddie Hearn hope to secure a world super bantamweight title eliminator for Gavin, who has relinquished his European crown to pursue world glory.
