Jamie McDonnell must set high tempo in Monaco duel

Dave Coldwell takes Jamie McDonnell to Monaco next weekend eager to enhance the reputation of a fighter who - as we pointed out yesterday - doesn't always get his fair share of the headlines.

McDonnell, ranked highly at bantamweight following two memorable wins over outstanding Japanese rival Tomoki Kameda, sees his position threatened by dangerous Venezuelan Liborio Solis and Coldwell and the Hatfield, Doncaster boxer man are working harder than ever to ensure that all their efforts to secure massive fights next year are not undone via the heavy hands of the South American.

“I’ve had a good look at Solis and this is a real test for Jamie” said Coldwell.

“Some of his losses came early in his career and the only guy to beat him recently is the brilliant Shinsuke Yamanaka.

“He’s had two wins since and his confidence of getting the win will more than likely be high because he had Yamanaka in all sorts of trouble early on their fight and he has a lot of power.

“He can be outboxed and outworked so I want Jamie to set a high pace behind his jab but he has to stay switched on.

“Solis has shown that he has world class power and that he can hurt anyone so Jamie must not get caught with anything silly.”

If victorious against Solis, Coldwell wants McDonnell to take part in big nights and believes his man can compete with stars north of the bantamweight league.

He added, “Jamie is huge at bantam and he’s got a big frame that could easily see him at super bantam or maybe even beyond that.

“We made some noise about fighting Scott Quigg but it doesn’t look like that can happen...but there’s still a few big names that stand out so a big fight for Jamie in 2017 is what we want to put our efforts into.

“Right now, the immediate target is Solis on November 12th and Jamie has to look good and get the job done.”
