Jack Haslam is British champion and brother Ross third as City of Sheffield Diving scoops nine medals

Star performers were the Haslam brothers Jack and Ross. Jack produced a personal best score to become British champion on the 3 metre springboard.

In a superb competition in which five divers exceeding the 400-point benchmark, Jack produced a scintillating performance to take the gold with brother Ross winning bronze, just six points behind him.

One of the keys to the Haslam brothers’ success was the brilliance of their reverse 1½ somersault with 3½ twists dives; Jack’s achieved 79 points while Ross’s produced 84 points. Olympian Freddie Woodward was fifth.

Ross also produced a personal best to take the silver medal in the 1 metre springboard final with Freddie taking bronze. Jack was in seventh place.

Ross and Jack then joined forces to take the silver medal in the 3 metre synchro event with Freddie, in partnership with James Heatly from Edinburgh, taking bronze.

In the women’s 3 metre synchro event, Millie Fowler and Millie Haffety produced a fine performance to take the silver medal. Their score of 269 points was only five points behind that of the gold medallists.

Millie Fowler had a fantastic tournament. On top of synchro success she won bronze medals in both the 3 metre and 1 metre springboard events.

Her highest scoring dive on the 3 metre board was a forward 2 ½ somersault with 1 twist which achieved 63 points. Millie Haffety came fifth on the 1 metre board with Fern Hitchin in seventh place.

Strong performances in the platform events came from Tia McGarry and Owen Harrison. Georgia Davenport unluckily missed out on the final by just a couple of points. Elliot Beedon, Holly Prasanto and Raffael Benitez all produced good performances in their preliminary competitions.

It also marked the first time Haslam had won a senior national title in the 3m, leaving him visibly delighted.

“I’m really really happy. It’s a PB performance for me with a score of 420 so I’m really pleased with that,” he said.

“Obviously it was extra nice to have my little brother on the podium with me as well. I’m absolutely ecstatic.

“Coming in to this event and over Christmas I did have three weeks off with a bit of a bad neck so that’s been frustrating.

“The last few weeks I’ve actually been having really good training on 3m though so I kind of just wanted to come in and show what I could do. Thankfully I managed to do that!”

Back in 2009, Haslam was the only individual medallist for the British team at the European Junior Championships when he secured bronze in the 3m springboard.

He then took a two-year hiatus from the sport, returning in 2013 to claim his second European Junior medal alongside City of Sheffield teammate Freddie Woodward for silver in the 3m synchro.
