It's time to say enough is enough

I really must take issue with Paul Colk (Letters, March 24) who says he is 'fed up with people's hysteria' and their fear that 'we are being outnumbered and that the immigrants will take over Britain' and likens their concerns to what happened in years gone by.

The present immigration shambles cannot be compared with anything in previous years as the situation now is vastly different and involves far greater numbers of people. In 1960 75,000 people gained entry into our country from the Commonwealth as opposed to 323,000 in 2015, which of course now includes people from the EU countries and all far-flung corners of the earth.

In the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s those from the Caribbean, Pakistani and Indian communities came to our country with a totally different attitude, for they wanted to work hard and accepted our way of life.

Most of those entering Great Britain now do so because they are attracted by our generous benefits system and the knowledge that they will be housed, their children educated and all their medical needs provided by the state.

They also show no signs of attempting to integrate but want to change our culture and way of life to suit them.

Also, due to losing control of our borders, we are now faced with a dangerous threat to our national security which didn’t exist 60 or 70 years ago when the first immigrants started arriving in Britain.

The head of the police agency Europol has warned that as many as 5,000 terrorists are on the loose across Europe – 700 of them in the UK. We have seen the appalling incidents in Paris and Brussels which makes people justifiably concerned about what can happen when huge numbers of people descend on a country without adequate security checks and it would be naive to believe that none pose a terrorist threat.

It isn’t a case of mass hysteria, or being racist as many who oppose immigration are accused of, but we have to be realistic and face the fact that the immigration situation is completely out of control.

We have always been a tolerant nation and welcomed people to our shores but the time has come to say enough is enough and pull up the drawbridge as our country’s infrastructure is at breaking point and cannot cope with the burden of any more newcomers.
