It must have been a bad day

I read, with interest, Patrick Meleady's article 'Food for thought on EU vote, April 28, 2016.

I am a great supporter of Patrick, however, I can only think he was having a bad day when he experienced the hallucination of the EU being good for the UK.

It was a good idea when it started as the Common Market.

Unfortunately, it has been allowed to mutate into an uncontrollable monster, devouring countries and their sovereignty to feed its unquenchable appetite.

One of Patrick’s schoolboy errors was to say that we would lose the European Arrest Warrant. Maybe he is not aware of the International Arrest Warrant! Police and Security Services would maintain their links and the access to criminal information would not be affected.

The UK has an excellent recording system which is admired by many and we share more information with Europe than they share with us. The EU would be extremely foolish to sever this link.

Having more control over our own borders can only serve to help us be more selective who we let in. How on earth does Patrick think we would not be as safe?

All too often, no-one ever seems to mention that our membership of this outdated club costs the UK £350 million each week! Granted we do get some of this back, but much less than half.

Anything we did lose as a result of leaving the EU would be more than covered by the money we save on membership fees.

Let us not forget how we fared before being a member of the EU. It is not so long ago that this was the most powerful nation in the world. London was the richest city in the world. London ports were the busiest in the world. People come from all over the world to benefit from a British education.

We managed very well indeed without the EU.

Also, let us also be aware that the EU will continue to expand, and it will, like all Empires, collapse in on itself.

We need to get out to avoid being part of that collapse.

Also remember that a number of other countries will soon be joining the EU.

Not rich countries, but countries that have unstable records. How will that help?

I sincerely hope that Patrick recovers from his moment of confusion before the referendum and votes ‘OUT’.
