Is '˜Junction 33A' the answer to M1 jams in Sheffield?

Peel Logistics bought the plot in red next to Junction 34 for a transport hub while Meadowhalls extension plan and a new Ikea are also nearby.

A major study will assess whether ‘Junction 33A’ between Tinsley and Brinsworth could ease problems in an area plagued by jams.

It will also look at whether new roads are needed between Sheffield and Rotherham which avoid junctions 33 and 34 all together.

Leeds-based consultancy WSP which has been hired by Sheffield and Rotherham councils after the Government announced £1.4m funding.

WSP will create a ‘viable scheme’ that can be funded by the Department for Transport.

Mike Holmes, WSP technical director, said: “Capacity issues are only set to increase as more businesses and residents locate in an area which already suffers from a lack of good public transport links.

“It’s vital we find deliverable solutions to improve connectivity, by road and sustainable transport options, whilst anticipating the growth of the site.”

Projects in the area that could add to traffic problems include the Olympic Legacy Park and the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District between Catcliffe and Tinsley.

Last month, Peel Logistics announced plans for a £50m transport hub on a 48-acre plot next to Junction 34.

A £60m Ikea is set to open on Sheffield Road, Tinsley, in July and Meadowhall has plans for a £300m extension - which Highways England has put on hold due to traffic concerns.

Tom Finnegan-Smith, head of highways and transport at Sheffield City Council, said: “Tackling capacity problems in the area will enable the economy to achieve its full potential.”

A little-known new road between Sheffield and Rotherham opened in December. Blackburn Meadows Way links Meadowhall Way with Sheffield Road in Rotherham, it goes under Tinsley viaduct.

Meanwhile, Rotherham Council has £42m plans to widen the Parkway to three lanes between the Advanced Manufacturing Park and Junction 33.
