South Yorkshire Police said the officer, who was riding a marked police bike, was responding to reports of a silver BMW failing to stop for officers.

The bike was involved in a collision with a blue Toyota Avensis, driven by a 64-year-old man, and the officer was pronounced dead a short time later.

The Toyota driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Nether Lane was closed for a number of hours yesterday while collision investigators examined the crash scene to piece together exactly what happened.

Witnesses to the collision or anyone with dashcam footage should call 101 and quote incident number 374 of April 22.
