CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed a decision by a Houses of Parliament committee to investigate the work of security provider G4S housing asylum seekers in Sheffield.

Keith Vaz, chairman of the Parliamentary Home Affairs Select Committee, has confirmed that the body is to investigate the G4S Yorkshire and North East asylum housing contract.

The decision follows evidence which included a submission by South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group.

A SYMAAG spokesman said: “The decision of the Home Affairs Committee comes after a year of campaigning which has exposed unfit and poor quality housing in Sheffield and Rotherham, a pregnant asylum seeker evicted in Rotherham, and families left for months packed and waiting to move in Barnsley.”
