Injured Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Hooper heads to Spain for treatment on his hip

Gary Hooper looks increasingly likely to miss the start of the new Championship season as the striker battles to overcome a long-standing hip problem.

The Owls forward, who has not played competitively since Boxing Day, has travelled to Spain to receive treatment on his injury.

Hooper is currently spending time with Dr José Manuel Sánchez at the CEREDE Sports Rehab centre in Barcelona. Sanchez has previously worked with Hooper and his Wednesday teammate Sam Hutchinson. He helped Hutchinson recover from an ankle knock earlier this year.

But the latest twist in Hooper's rehabilitation comes just days after he took part in a double training session at Middlewood Road.

The 30-year-old, who is out of contract next summer, notched 11 goals in 25 matches last term.

And while a big question mark remains over when Hooper will return to action, Steven Fletcher stepped up his recovery from injury by playing half an hour in Saturday's behind-closed-doors friendly victory over NAC Breda. The Scotland international may be given another run-out in tomorrow's warm-up match at Mansfield Town.

Midfielder Kieran Lee was not involved against Breda, with Jos Luhukay's men prevailing after a 12th minute strike by Atdhe Nuhiu at Manchester City's training ground.
