Injured Sheffield police officer recovering after surgery following axe attack

An injured Sheffield police officer attacked with an axe is recovering in hospital this morning following surgery.

The woman, who has served with South Yorkshire Police for around 10 years, suffered a fractured skull, broken leg and severe hand injuries in the incident at a flat in Plowright Close, Gleadless Valley, on Wednesday night.

She underwent surgery for all three injuries yesterday.

Chief Superintendent David Hartley, Sheffield’s District Commander, said full recovery could take some time.

“Surgery went well yesterday, everything went as hoped,” he said.

“I think it’s still going to be a long journey to recovery but the surgery to her leg, her hand and her head all went very well.”

The police officer was one of five injured in the incident and at the nearby Co-op on Blackstock Road.

Nathan Sumner, aged 35, of Plowright Close, has been charged with attempted murder, six counts of assault by beating, a section 47 assault, two counts of making threats to kill, affray, threatening a person with a blade in a public place and production of cannabis.
