And Saunders immediately called out Golovkin, who holds the WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO titles at middleweight.

Kazakh Golovkin was the first man to beat Ingle-trained Kell Brook who stepped up from welterweight. Ingle threw in the towel in fifth round after Brook suffered a broken eye socket.

Natural middleweight Saunders is confident he can end be the first man to beat Golovkin, who has stopped 33 of his 37 opponents.

He said: “Golovkin, you kept saying you want my WBO belt when I was 14 stone, out of shape and wasn’t in love with boxing,” he said in an interview shown on BT Sport.

“Then you wanted to fight me. Fight me now. Now fight me, cos we’ll be seeing a different story. You’ll be punching fresh air.”

It seems likely Golovkin will next face Saul Canelo Alvarez in a rematch of their draw from September. A May 5 date has been mooted for the bout which would delay Saunders’ hopes of facing the winner until the autumn.

Saunders was a convincing winner on all the judges’ scorecards – 120-108, 117-111, 118-110 – on Saturday night and remains undefeated.
