'˜Incredible night' for Barnsley as Reds book Wembley date

Johnson’s men won 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Fleetwood Town at the Highbury Stadium after a second northern final 1-1 draw against the Cod Army.

The visitors enjoyed much the better chances in the second leg on the Fylde coast, but the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.

Conor Hourihane had put Barnsley 1-0 up on the night, but an Aidy White own goal leveled matters and it would take a penalty shoot out to separate the two League One sides.

Goalkeeper Adam Davies was then the hero, saving two penalties as the Reds won 4-2 in the nerve-shredding shoot-out.

And Johnson said his side were deserved winners on the night, even if they had to do it the hard way.

He said: “It was an incredible night in the end.

“Tensions were high and nerves were jangling, but throughout the game itself I thought we did alright.

“We should have had a penalty and how Ashley Fletcher missed his chance at the end I’ll never know, but for us, the fans, and everyone at the club, it’s brilliant that we’ve given them the chance to go to Wembley.

“I felt the right team won in the end given the balance of lay over both ties, but once it does go to penalties you really never know.

“It’s a lottery, but fair play to Adam Davies and the lads who scored.

“To be honest I thought that was it when Ashley missed.

“It was set up for a home win at their place, but Adam is very good a reading penalties.

“I’m delighted for him because he’s the hero.”
