Increase in bicycle thefts in city centre

CYCLISTS are being warned to be on their guard after an increase in bicycle thefts in Sheffield city centre.

Officers have seen an increase in bike thefts in the last month and are urging cyclists to get their property stamped with their postcodes by contacting their local safer neighbourhood team.

Gang of poachers

A GANG of suspected poachers were detained near a Doncaster village after the South Yorkshire police helicopter crew filmed one of them allegedly attacking a horse.

The incident happened as the aircraft flew over Harlington, near Mexborough, last week.

Two men were dealt with for poaching offences on the spot while a third was bailed pending further enquiries.

Break-ins probe

POLICE are investigating after two sheds and two cars were broken into in Heeley.

Officers from the Woodseats and Gleadless Valley Safer Neighbourhood team are also investigating the shed burglaries on Alexander Road, Heeley, a theft from a car on Slate Street and the theft of power tools from a vehicle which also happened on Alexander Road.

Chimney fire

FIRE crews were called to a chimney fire at a house on Moorland Road, Hathersage, at just before midnight on Tuesday.

Firefighters from Hathersage station used stirrups and rods to put out the burning chimney, and engineers were later called out after a strong smell of gas was reported in the area.

The engineers couldn’t find any evidence of a gas leak.

Bin arson attack

A WHEELIE bin was set on fire in an arson attack on Tunwell Avenue, Parson Cross.

Firefighters from Elm Lane station were called out at 12.50am yesterday, and spent 15 minutes extinguishing the flames.

Car is set alight

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blazing car on South Street, Park Hill, on Tuesday night just before 8pm.

A crew from Central fire station attended the fire, and found a Ford Galaxy car had been set alight.

The blaze is being treated as deliberate.
