There was some concern from fans that Wednesdayites would not be able to catch a train back if the promotion clash against Hull City went to extra time and penalties.

But East Midlands trains have put on an extra train leaving London St Pancras station at 2140.

This would mean if the game goes the distance, Owls fans should have just over an hour to get back to the station.

A number of additional services are expected to run between Sheffield and London St Pancras before the match, and extra carriages will also be provided on a number of trains.

An East Midlands Trains spokesman said extra services will run from Sheffield at 0800, 0918 and 1018 and trains leaving from Sheffield at 0829, 1049, 1129 and 1249 will all be longer than normal.

But Andrew Conroy, of East Midlands trains, is urging Owls supporters to make their way back to the station as soon as possible to avoid missing their train.

He said: “We know it’s going to be a very exciting day for Sheffield Wednesday fans and we’ve worked hard to provide as much space as we can on our trains to and from London for the final.

“We know that many fans will want to stay in London after the match and either celebrate or commiserate but our strong advice is that anybody wanting to travel back to the north on our services should head back to St Pancras as quickly as possible.

“We’ll have extra staff at St Pancras to help customers with their journeys but our strong message is for fans to be aware that the last trains will leave at 2056, 2101 and 2140 to travel north.”
