Icon of the skies to go on show at Doncaster Robin Hood Airport

Another iconic British cold war jet - the Canberra - has joined the Vulcan bomber at its base at Doncaster Robin Hood Airport.

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust, which is based at the airport, is now looking to restore the English Electric Canberra jet - which once held the world record for the highest flight.

The trust want to restore the aircraft and return her to the airshow circuit, aiming to help celebrate the centenary of the RAF in 2018.

The aircraft travelled via road on a 100-mile trip from Coventry to Doncaster last week, after having its wings removed temporarily. It is now in the trust’s engineering facility at Hangar 3, Robin Hood Airport , where the restoration will take place.

Dr Robert Pleming, chief executive of the trust, said: “We are thrilled to welcome the Canberra to Hanger 3, where she will be thoroughly assessed by our engineers to establish the work required, before we start the restoration itself in early 2017.

“The Canberra is a real symbol of British courage and innovation. As we did with the restoration of the Vulcan, we are looking forward to capturing the hearts and minds of the general public, as well as tomorrow’s aviators and engineers, with guided tours and an educational programme built around her restoration.”

The inspection and ‘project scoping’ phase will now begin - involving a detailed strip-down, examination and testing to determine the work needed to return the plane to flight.

The project is expected to take the remainder of the summer.

A plan will then be put in place to allow each part of the restoration to be completed.

The trust has launched a fundraising campaign, asking the public for donations to make the restoration possible, in exchange for a variety of gifts, including a photo.

The Canberra WK163 is now on display at the airport and can be viewed as part of daily tours.
