Ice cream van granted spot after ‘illegal’ vendors tried to steal it

Andrew Cuneos and his wife own a successful business which sells ice cream in multiple parts of the city including two vans in Endcliffe Park.

He said: “There has been ice cream vans pulling up illegally and we can’t do anything about it – we can never get anyone to come out soon enough to move them when we call licensing, this would help put them off if we’re already there.

“When the park is busy there is demand for another van - we’re a victim of our own success - unfortunately we never know in advance when it’s going to be busy but when it is it’s manic. We have no intention of putting another van there permanently.”

Their application to sell on Rustlings Road, at the entrance to the park, faced two objections from residents who were concerned about children queuing near traffic while they are getting ice cream and the effects on climate change. 

Mr Cuneos said they had lots of experience from running for a long time and assured them it was safe area. 

He added that they have climate-friendly vans with ‘negligible’ emissions which they try and update every couple of years but said this gets very expensive. 

The decision to grant the license was made at Sheffield City Council’s licensing committee meeting.
