I feel safer relying on NATO

I agree with his implied comment that the average American does not share our Prime Minister’s view of this relationship. While it is true that America only entered the war with Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbour, and with Germany when that country declared war on them, it should be acknowledged that without initial American military equipment/food aid, provided at a price, and subsequent supply of troops, we would probably have lost the war.

History records that in World War 2, of our European neighbours, France with a larger army than Germany built a Maginot Wall. Germany went around that wall and invaded! Despite their armed forces numerical superiority, the French government capitulated. Italy initially fought with Germany before joining the Allies when they seemed to be gaining the upper hand. Spain officially remained neutral. We entered the war when Germany invaded Poland.

While not wishing to detract from the sacrifice made by our military forces, without the involvement of Russia and then America I believe that our country and Europe would definitely have been defeated by Germany.

I must comment on the statement that the countries of Europe must work together to defend themselves. I agree with the assertion, however easier said than done. Of the current 28 EU members, we are one of a very few who are meeting America’s request to pay 2% of our annual GDP to support NATO defence spending. The rest appear to be relying on NATO support should they be attacked, yet do not wish to pay their dues.

If we have to ‘cosy up to America’ for military help we have at least paid our dues in contributing financially to NATO. I feel safer with that organisation than I do with relying on European military support. Cyril Olsen
