Sheffield council and Amey were given legal permission to carry on.

If they were to be open about their plans there is no doubt that the activists would have hampered the felling by crowding around the trees – as to a lesser extent they still did.

This would be dangerous and would stop the felling.

One of the legal roles of the police is to protect the council in legal activity.

The council could only carry out their legitimate business with police protection and without warning.

Cars had to be removed for safety – that much is also obvious.

Those who endangered themselves and tried to impede the felling had to be removed.

What happened is the only way Amey could have done it.

The Star and Nick Clegg should support the council in their legitimate activity, not support the hysteria and illegal activism.
