Hundreds welcome plans for £300m Meadowhall extension

More than 1,400 people saw the plans for a £300m extension to Meadowhall - with 94 per cent of those who gave feedback welcoming the project.

The proposals went on show at the Sheffield shopping centre on Friday and Saturday.

The centre’s joint owner, British Land, wants to create a 330,000sq ft leisure hall – covered in a giant lattice-like roof, which will include restaurants, a new cinema and space for all sorts of activities, from 10-pin bowling to indoor golf. The project would be the single biggest investment in the Sheffield shopping complex since it opened 26 years ago, and will create more than 1,000 jobs.

As part of the consultation and feedback process, 477 feedback forms have so far been submitted, with 447 answering ‘yes’ to the question: “In general, do you agree with our plans to provide more options for leisure and dining at Meadowhall?”

When asked what they liked most about the plans, people’s most popular answers were the design, having more places to eat and drink and more choice of activities for children.

The public consultation was a very useful event, and a great opportunity to hear people’s feedback. We are now reviewing all comments and considering what can be incorporated and taken forward into the proposal.”

A detailed planning application for the leisure hall will be submitted in late summer 2016. If the proposals are approved, British Land hope to start work on site during 2018 and open the Leisure Hall to visitors in late 2020/early 2021.
