Campaigners gathered at Derwent Dam to protest at the demise of the hen harrier bird of prey - as the grouse shooting season begins today on the ‘Glorious 12th’.

Around 600 people turned up on Sunday to protest in the torrential rain at intensive management of upland areas for the sport of grouse shooting, which has led to the near-extinction of the protected hen harrier in England.

Springwatch TV presenter Chris Packham, who led the protests, said: “We’re not going to put up with our national heritage being slaughtered and be told it’s okay because it protects our landscape.”
