Humberside police charge man with murder

Officers from Humberside police have charged a man with murder following a disturbance in which one man died and another was seriously hurt.

Dean Southwick, 29, was found badly injured in Churchill Way, Grimsby on Friday and died later in hospital.

An 18-year-old local man, who was found in Eleanor Street, was in a stable condition in Hull Royal Infirmary.

Michael David Preston (19), of Durban Road in Grimsby, has this afternoon been charged with the murder of Dean Southwick and the attempt murder of an 18-year-old Grimsby man.

He has been remanded in police custody until Monday when he will appear at Grimsby and Cleethorpes Magistrates Court.

The mother of Mr Southwick Lisa Briggs and her partner Trevor Day urged the local community to leave the investigation to the police and not to take matters into their own hands.

In a statement they said: “We have every confidence in the police and believe that they will bring the person responsible for the death of Dean to justice.

“We know that feelings are running high locally but we don’t want retribution. We want the police to be allowed to conduct their inquiries and take the necessary course of action to resolve this matter for us.

“We are devastated by the loss of Dean and want to be free to grieve for him without worrying that others will try to take the law into their own hands.”
