Huge escaped 'emu' spotted wandering through farmer's field in Doncaster

The long-necked bird was spotted casually taking a stroll through the field in Sprotbrough – much to the bemusement of onlookers.

Rachel Walker, who spotted the animal while walking her dog, said she was stunned when she saw it making its way through the field near Richmond Hill School.

She said: “It’s not a normal sighting!

"I was just walking home with my mum and dog, it’s our usual route and saw it in the distance, wasn’t what we usually see.”

“I haven’t seen it before, but have seen a Facebook post about it before. It carried on walking up towards Sprotbrough Road.”

People have been speculating on the bird’s species, with some describing it as an ostrich, while others said the bird is a rhea.

It is not the first time a similar type of bird has been spotted on the loose in Doncaster.

Back in 2016, police were stunned when they spotted a huge rhea loose on the streets of Intake.

And and in 2014, a large escaped bird, similar to an emu that caused ‘havoc’ on Doncaster’s roads, was caught by the RSPCA.

The young rhea bird, which was initially thought to be an emu, escaped was spotted running across Melton Road, High Melton.

RSPCA officers later caught the bird, which can reach speeds of up to 40mph.
