In reply to your leader column on Saturday: ‘Is HS2 too high a cost?’ HS2 has been subject to a great deal of debate in Parliament and in the country.

Last week there was a lengthy debate in the House of Commons. Far from forging ahead without discussion the HS2 project is one of the most debated and the subject of intensive consideration both technically and environmentally. The reason for building it is to create jobs and prosperity by making our country and our economy more efficient. Many of our rail services in South Yorkshire are overcrowded and HS2 will provide extra capacity and faster links to other cities.

Wherever the station is built it is expected that businesses will gather around it, to benefit from the opportunities it offers and access to markets in other cities will increase.
