How many below average?

It is excellent news that Lowfield Primary school has been ranked in the top 10 per cent of schools nationally (The Star, May 23), even though 88 per cent of the pupils do not speak English as their first language.

However, it begs the question as to why many Sheffield schools fall below the average, and have done for many years.

This situation has to be the fault of poor leadership in the schools and the inability or even unwillingness of the Labour council to do anything about it.

This is a reflection on the lack of aspiration on the part of the schools and the council on behalf of the pupils, and constitutes a condemnation of bright pupils to a lesser education and eventually poorer qualifications for the world of work.

If Lowfield Primary can do it, others should be able to, and significant improvements should be made within the next year or two.
